MUFG Kogei Project and the Art Institute of Chicago Host “Beyond Tradition—Emerging Japanese Craft Artists”
Chicago, IL (April 7, 2026)— Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), one of the 10 largest global financial groups, in partnership with the Art Institute of Chicago, presented Beyond Tradition—Emerging Japanese Craft Artists, a cultural program highlighting the evolution of traditional Japanese craftsmanship through contemporary artistic expression.
Held at the Art Institute of Chicago, the event was part of the MUFG KOGEI Project, an initiative dedicated to supporting the preservation and continued innovation of Japanese craft, or kogei, including both contemporary artistic works and craft objects intended for everyday use. Rooted in MUFG’s belief that tradition and innovation are deeply interconnected, the project supports the passing down and development of craft while encouraging new approaches and sustainable ideas. The program was organized under the KOGEI ARTISTS LEAGUE, one of the initiatives within the MUFG KOGEI Project that fosters emerging artists by creating opportunities to engage with global audiences.
“Japanese craftsmanship—kogei—represents a unique fusion of refined techniques and aesthetics cultivated over centuries. Its brilliance has endured through time, and even today, it continues to evolve in response to the changing era,” said Akiko Shikimori, MUFG’s Chief Corporate Branding Officer and leader of MUFG’s KOGEI Project.
The program featured keynote remarks, artist talks, and a panel discussion examining how time honored materials and techniques are being reinterpreted by a new generation of Japanese craft artists. Participating artists included Tanabe Chikuunsai IV, Kanae Iwata, Ichigo Araki, and Hayato Terashima, whose works span bamboo, metal, ceramics, lacquer, and mixed media.
Executive Chairman of MUFG Americas Holding Corporation Hiroshi Kawano delivered opening remarks, underscoring the longstanding partnership between MUFG and the Art Institute of Chicago and their shared commitment to cultural exchange. MUFG has operated in the United States for more than 140 years and has partnered with the Art Institute of Chicago for over three decades.
“Tanabe Chikuunsai IV’s observation that ‘tradition is challenge,’ together with the dedication of artists deeply engaged in craftsmanship, left a profound impression on participants,” said Mr. Kawano. “The Art Institute of Chicago’s sincere appreciation for this partnership further strengthened MUFG’s presence and visibility in Chicago.”
The event welcomed leaders from cultural institutions, academia, business, and the Japanese and U.S. cultural communities, reinforcing the role of art and craftsmanship as a bridge between tradition, innovation, and international dialogue.
Through Beyond Tradition—Emerging Japanese Craft Artists, MUFG and the Art Institute of Chicago reaffirmed their commitment to advancing cultural stewardship and supporting the next generation of artists shaping the future of Japanese crafts.
